Your mood has a source. Your drive has one too, and so does the calm that arrives after a long hug or a hard run. All of it runs on signaling molecules, and 4 of them do more of that work than any others.
Dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins get called the happy hormones. The nickname is doing a lot of work, and the part it gets wrong is more interesting than the part it gets right.

What are the 4 happy hormones?
Dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins. Every popular list names those 4, and each one shapes a different part of how a day feels.
None of the 4 is a happiness switch. The useful question isn't which one is low, it's which part of your experience is off, because they answer to different things.
Are happy hormones actually hormones?
Half of them are, and which half is the part worth knowing. A hormone travels through the bloodstream to act on something far away. A neurotransmitter crosses the tiny gap between 2 nerve cells and is cleared within milliseconds.
Oxytocin is a genuine hormone. It's a 9 amino acid peptide made in the hypothalamus and released into the blood from the posterior pituitary, as the NIH reference Oxytocin sets out.
Beta-endorphin is both. The pituitary secretes it into the bloodstream, and it also acts directly on nerve cells, which the NIH reference Biochemistry, Endorphin describes as dual neurohormonal function.
Dopamine and serotonin are the 2 that don't fit. Inside the brain they work as neurotransmitters rather than hormones. That is why the nickname irritates people who study them.
The nickname is therefore half right, and the half it gets wrong happens to cover the 2 molecules most people are actually asking about.
What does dopamine do?
Dopamine is the brain's signal for "this matters, do it again." It fires in pursuit of something rather than on arrival. Anticipating a reward often lands harder than getting it.
Dopamine is built from tyrosine and needs vitamin B6, magnesium and iron to finish the conversion. Dopamine and norepinephrine both belong to a family called catecholamines, as the NIH reference Physiology, Catecholamines sets out.
What supports healthy dopamine pathways: aerobic exercise, sleep, sunlight and protein. Tyrosine comes from foods like chicken, eggs, almonds and avocado. Less time on a screen helps as well.*
What does serotonin do?
Serotonin is less about the spike and more about the floor. Where dopamine drives pursuit, serotonin underpins the baseline steadiness that makes an ordinary day feel fine.
Most of the body's serotonin is made in the gut rather than the brain. Digestive health and mood keep turning up in the same research for that reason. Serotonin is built from tryptophan and needs vitamin B6, folate and zinc.
What supports healthy serotonin pathways: morning sunlight, fermented foods and steady stress management. Tryptophan comes from turkey, oats, pumpkin seeds and cheese.*
What does oxytocin do?
Oxytocin is the one that answers to other people. It rises with warmth, touch and closeness, and it's the molecule behind the settled feeling after real contact with someone you trust.*
Oxytocin has 2 established jobs in the body that are not in dispute: it drives contractions in labor and it triggers milk release during nursing. The broader social research is real and considerably less settled.
Oxytocin also does something almost no other hormone does. Most hormones shut themselves down through negative feedback, and oxytocin instead runs on positive feedback, where releasing it prompts a larger release still.
What supports it is unglamorous and free: physical contact, time with people you like, and warmth. There is no food that supplies it.*
What do endorphins do?
Endorphins damp pain and lift mood after effort. The name is a contraction of endogenous morphine, which describes the job accurately: they act on the same receptors an opioid drug does.*
Beta-endorphin is a chain of 31 amino acids cut out of a larger protein called POMC. The pituitary and the brain stem are where most of it comes from.
The runner's high has been measured directly. Boecker, November 2008, in Cerebral Cortex, scanned 10 athletes before and after 2 hours of endurance running. Fewer opioid receptors were left free afterwards. That is how you infer the body released its own opioids, and the size of the change tracked with how euphoric the runners said they felt.*
What supports them: sustained exercise rather than brief exercise, laughter, and the kind of effort that is uncomfortable while you are doing it.*
Why is norepinephrine left off most lists?
Norepinephrine is missing from nearly every happy hormone list, and the omission is strange, because it is built directly out of the dopamine you already have.
Norepinephrine is the readiness signal. It sharpens attention and governs how well you meet a demand that has just landed. Its reputation is stress rather than happiness, which is probably why the lists skip it.
The connection to dopamine is the single most useful fact here. The 2 pathways are not independent, so anything supporting one tends to reach the other, and anything that starves the raw material starves both.
Norepinephrine is also both a neurotransmitter and a hormone, made in the brain and in the adrenal glands. That puts it with oxytocin and beta-endorphin rather than with dopamine and serotonin.

The clearest way to hold the difference is to compare what each governs, what it's built from, and whether it's genuinely a hormone.

What depletes the happy hormones day to day?
Modern life presses on every one of these pathways at once, and 4 factors carry most of the weight.
Sleep loss. Volkow and colleagues used brain imaging to show that a single night without sleep reduced the availability of dopamine D2 receptors in the ventral striatum, and the size of that reduction tracked with how much alertness participants lost. The study is Volkow, May 2012, in the Journal of Neuroscience, and it tested one night of total deprivation rather than ordinary poor sleep.
Chronic stress. Sustained cortisol affects dopamine and serotonin signaling over time, and prolonged stress also depletes magnesium, a cofactor every one of these pathways needs.*
Isolation. Oxytocin answers to contact, so a life with very little of it has removed the main input that raises it.*
Nutritional gaps. The body can't make dopamine without tyrosine or serotonin without tryptophan, and it needs B6, B12, folate, iron, zinc, magnesium and vitamin D to turn those precursors into finished molecules. A nutrient-poor diet undermines the whole process before anything else matters.*
Where does saffron fit?
Saffron acts on 2 of the 4, and only 2. Crocus sativus is among the most studied botanicals for mood, and the research covers dopamine and serotonin. Nothing in it connects saffron to oxytocin or endorphins.*
3 compounds account for most of that attention.
- Crocins, the water-soluble carotenoids that give saffron its color, and among the uncommon plant compounds able to cross the blood-brain barrier.
- Safranal, the aromatic compound behind saffron's scent, studied for interaction with serotonin and GABA receptors.
- Picrocrocin, a marker of extract authenticity, which converts to safranal during processing and digestion.
The proposed mechanism is monoamine reuptake inhibition. Saffron's compounds appear to slow the reabsorption of these molecules after release, leaving them active longer. Siddiqui reviewed that evidence in March 2022 in Molecules, drawing mostly on laboratory and animal work.*
The trial that speaks most directly to someone who already feels fine is Jackson, February 2021, in Frontiers in Nutrition. 56 healthy adults carrying ordinary stress took 30mg of standardized saffron or a placebo daily for 8 weeks and then sat a lab stress test. Heart rate variability fell in the placebo group under that pressure and held steady in the saffron group.*
That measurement comes off the body rather than off a questionnaire, which is what makes it the most interesting number in the paper. The same trial had the saffron group scoring higher on the social relationships part of a quality-of-life questionnaire by week 8, while its headline mood score didn't separate the 2 groups. That last detail is one most summaries leave out.
The largest human trial is more recent. Lopresti, May 2025, in The Journal of Nutrition, ran a placebo-controlled trial in 202 adults over 12 weeks and found the saffron group reported better mood and general wellbeing than the placebo group.*
2 limits on that study are worth stating plainly. It used a branded extract called affron. That isn't the extract in our product, so it's evidence about saffron as an ingredient rather than about any one bottle. The dose it validated was 28mg daily, which is where most peer-reviewed saffron mood research sits.
What researchers are still working out
Which compound does what is unsettled. Reviews disagree on whether crocins or safranal carry more of the effect on serotonin, because saffron has mostly been studied as a whole extract, so the compound-level story is still a working model.
Nearly all of the mechanism work sits in laboratory and animal studies. That's where mechanism work belongs. It tells you where to look, and in saffron's case it pointed at the systems the human trials went on to measure.
Most human saffron trials recruit people already experiencing low mood, which is what makes Jackson's healthy-adult trial both the more directly relevant one and the rarer one. More studies in well populations would settle the question faster.
How long does any of this take?
Longer than most people expect, and that's true of every lever here. Saffron research consistently finds effects emerging over weeks of daily use rather than days.*
Oxytocin and endorphins are the exception, and they move on a timescale of minutes. A hug works now. A long run works today. Neither one compounds unless you keep doing it.*
Sleep, exercise and diet behave like saffron rather than like a hug. These systems respond to patterns, not to single events.

Commonly described patterns include low motivation, difficulty enjoying things that used to be enjoyable, procrastination and flat energy. These are descriptions, not a diagnosis. The same patterns have many possible causes, several of them medical, so persistent symptoms are a conversation for a healthcare provider rather than something to self-assess from an article.
What foods support dopamine and serotonin?

No at-home test can tell you your brain dopamine level.
