Saffron for Sleep: What 4 Trials Found and When They Dosed
Four placebo-controlled trials have tested saffron extract for sleep, and all 4 reported better sleep with saffron. Three of them measured a bigger improvement than placebo. Each ran 4 to 6 weeks in adults with poor sleep, and 3 of the 4 gave saffron once a day in the evening, 2 of them about an hour before bed. A 2023 review of 5 trials called the support for saffron and sleep "initial". The trials tested 3 branded extracts, at 14 to 30 mg a day.
Saffron360 hasn't been studied for sleep. It's a different extract from the ones in these trials, so their results describe theirs, not ours. Below: what each trial found, when they dosed, how fast sleep changed, and what the research doesn't show yet.
What do saffron sleep trials show?
| Trial | Who took part | Extract and dose | When it was taken | What the trial reported |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lopresti, 2020 | 63 adults aged 18 to 70 with self-reported sleep problems | affron®, 14 mg twice daily, 28 days | Not stated in the abstract | Insomnia Severity Index, restorative sleep and sleep diary quality ratings improved more than placebo |
| Lopresti, 2021 | 120 adults with unsatisfactory sleep | affron®, 14 or 28 mg once, 28 days | 1 hour before bed | Sleep quality ratings, mood after waking and insomnia symptom scores improved more than placebo |
| Pachikian, 2021 | 66 adults with mild to moderate sleep problems linked to anxiety | Saffr'activ, 15.5 mg once, 6 weeks | In the evening | Ease of getting to sleep and sleep quality scores improved in the saffron group, with no change on placebo |
| Schuster, 2025 | 165 adults with moderate insomnia symptoms | Safr'Inside™, 20 or 30 mg once, 4 weeks | About 60 minutes before bedtime | Insomnia symptom scores, sleep quality from week 3 and perceived stress improved more than placebo |
Most of what these trials measured was people rating their own sleep. The 2021 affron trial also measured hormones and found higher evening melatonin with saffron, with no change in evening cortisol (Lopresti, 2021).
When should you take saffron for sleep?
In the evening, about an hour before bed. That's the timing in the 2 largest trials, 120 adults on affron and 165 adults on Safr'Inside. The third once-daily trial gave one capsule every day in the evening with a glass of water (Pachikian, 2021). The fourth split a 28 mg daily dose into 2 doses of 14 mg.
No trial has compared evening dosing with morning dosing for sleep. Our guide to when to take saffron sets out when every mood and sleep trial dosed, side by side.
How long does saffron take to work for sleep?
About 3 to 4 weeks in the trials. In the 2025 Safr'Inside trial, sleep quality in both saffron groups pulled ahead of placebo after 3 weeks and stayed ahead at week 4 (Schuster, 2025). The affron trials reported their results after 28 days. Our guide to how long saffron takes to work has the full week-by-week timeline.
How much saffron did sleep trials use?
Between 14 and 30 mg a day, depending on the extract. In the 2021 affron trial, 14 mg and 28 mg gave similar sleep improvements, and in the 2025 Safr'Inside trial both 20 mg and 30 mg improved sleep quality more than placebo. Each dose belongs to the extract it was tested with. Our saffron dosage guide lists every trial dose.
What does the research review say?
A 2023 systematic review pooled 5 randomized trials with 379 participants from 3 countries. It concluded that "saffron has a beneficial influence on duration and quality of sleep," and described that support as initial (Sadat Rafiei, 2023).
What don't the sleep trials show?
Saffron sleep research is young, and 4 limits are worth knowing before you read too much into it:
- Most outcomes were questionnaires and sleep diaries, not lab sleep studies.
- The longest trial ran 6 weeks, so these trials give no long-term data.
- At least 2 of the 4 were funded by the extract's maker, which is normal for a branded ingredient and worth knowing.
- In the 2021 and 2025 trials, a number of secondary measures showed no difference from placebo.
The trial authors make the same point. The 2021 affron paper says further research is required "using objective sleep measures, over a longer duration."
Is saffron safe to take before bed?
The 2 affron sleep trials reported saffron as well tolerated, and the 2025 trial recorded no serious adverse events. In that trial, daytime sleepiness scores showed no difference from placebo after 4 weeks of evening doses. If you take a sleep medication, talk to your doctor first, because an animal study found a saffron compound lengthened drug-induced sleep. Our saffron and medications guide covers that study and the other medication groups to check.
